Río Celeste Hideaway: Experiencing Nature From Within

The Journey From San José to Río Celeste

I set off from San José toward Río Celeste, a journey of approximately four hours that gently prepares you for what lies ahead.

As you approach the Cañas region, the scenery begins to shift: mountains draw closer, wind turbines spin gracefully reminding us of Costa Rica’s commitment to renewable energy and nature slowly takes center stage. It is a drive that truly leaves you in awe.

First Encounters With the Río Celeste Rainforest

My first stop upon arriving in the Río Celeste area was a hanging bridges tour set within a stunning private property. Three suspended bridges immersed in rainforest, guided by a local expert whose passion for nature was evident in every word.

One fact that stayed with me was learning about a tree that can only grow if a tapir eats its fruit a perfect example of symbiosis in nature. This was just one of many insights that deepened my appreciation for this remarkable ecosystem.

Coffee, Pineapple, Cacao & Sloths: A Must-Do Experience in Río Celeste

I then continued with a coffee, pineapple, sugar cane, and cacao tour, ending with a sloth search. If there is one experience in the area that should not be missed, this is it. Each explanation is delivered with care and depth, allowing you to truly understand the natural processes behind these products.

While all were fascinating, the pineapple stood out. The moment I tasted it, I understood the advantage of this land—rich minerals, ideal climate, and fertile soil combine to create an unforgettable flavor. Even now, I can still recall it. The trails are easy to walk, and the property itself is simply breathtaking.

Arrival at Río Celeste Hideaway: A Destination in Itself

Later, I made my way to the idyllic Río Celeste Hideaway. The drive from Bijagua to the hotel is an experience on its own. The surroundings, the fresh air, and the profound sense of calm begin long before arrival. Breathing in that pure air was, without a doubt, one of my favorite moments.

Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a refreshing cold towel simple, thoughtful, and perfectly timed followed by a cocktail that instantly reset my senses.

Garden-View Rooms Designed for Connection With Nature

My garden-view room was exactly what I needed: spacious, fully equipped, and designed for comfort. It featured both indoor and outdoor showers, and I made sure to enjoy the outdoor one during my stay. Showering surrounded by nature is a deeply sensory experience.

The bed, the 100% cotton linens, and the overall comfort made it tempting to stay in all day. But I knew there was still so much to explore. I sat on the balcony reading, accompanied only by the sounds of the rainforest.

Café Romance: Where Time Slows Down

In the afternoon, I visited Café Romance. It may sound like just another café, but it is much more than that. It is a space designed to slow down and enjoy the moment.

I started with a coffee and ended with an iced matcha with almond milk and a dessert while finishing my book. The service was warm and inviting, the décor beautiful, and the setting unforgettable surrounded by gardens where birds, raccoons, coatis, and the evening chorus of frogs create a natural symphony.

Río Celeste Tubing: Adventure Meets Tranquility

The following day, I experienced river tubing on Río Celeste. I personally enjoy balancing relaxation with adventure, and this activity delivers both. I was picked up directly from the hotel lobby and transferred to the starting point.

It was my first time tubing and less than 20 days later, I returned to do it again. Floating on electric-blue waters surrounded by jungle is simply magical. Suitable for all ages, you sit back, let the river guide you, and become part of it. A true highlight of my trip.

Tapir Valley & Night Walk: A Rare Wildlife Encounter

That afternoon, I joined our local expert guide, Marlon, for an unforgettable experience at Tapir Valley, a private property rich in wildlife and stories only locals can share.

Around 4:00 p.m., we set out in search of tapirs and we were incredibly lucky. Two tapirs appeared, calmly feeding and slowly approaching us. Watching them in complete silence and respect for nearly 20 minutes was a moment I will never forget.

As night fell, we began a guided night walk. With limited visibility, my senses sharpened. Sounds became more vivid. Frogs, snakes, insects and then, one more surprise: Gaia, a legendary tapir of the region. At that moment, I realized this experience had exceeded everything I had imagined.

Back at the hotel, I ended the day in the jacuzzis, allowing my body and mind to fully relax. A perfect closing, courtesy of Río Celeste Hideaway.

On my third day, I woke early to enjoy the complimentary breakfast at Kantala Restaurant a generous buffet catering to all tastes and dietary preferences.

Afterward, I explored the hotel’s private trails, which lead directly to Río Celeste. Sitting on the final deck, meditating with the sound of the river and the movement of the trees, I felt deeply present. Just nature and me.

Spa Experience: More Than a Treatment

Later, I headed to the spa. Wrapped in a robe, I enjoyed a one-hour massage that both my body and soul deeply appreciated. More than a spa, it is a sanctuary of self-care and connection.

Staying In: Pool, Lounge & Curated Spaces

That day, I chose to remain entirely at the hotel relaxing by the pool, enjoying signature cocktails, and exploring the common areas. The lounge near the lobby offers games, books, and a cozy atmosphere that invites you to stay.

Dinner was at Mandarina Restaurant, where I couldn’t resist ordering more than one dish. The menu is beautifully curated, and the freshness of each ingredient is unmistakable.

A key highlight: Río Celeste Hideaway’s gastronomy has earned Michelin recognition and it shows. Each dish is designed to create lasting memories.

I ended the evening at Cantina Delirio, enjoying tropical music and a bartender-recommended cocktail featuring passion fruit and gin—two of my favorite flavors. Simply exceptional.

Tenorio Volcano National Park: The Heart of Río Celeste

On my final day, I visited Tenorio Volcano National Park, one of the most impressive natural wonders I have ever seen. The hike is moderate and accessible to visitors of all ages.

From the bubbling springs to the bridges and finally the waterfall, every step is awe-inspiring. Standing before the waterfall, feeling the power of the water and seeing that deep blue color, gave me chills. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our national parks.
